KISSPEPTIN
Kisspeptin - HPG Axis Activator (KISS1R Agonist)
Kisspeptin is a research peptide encoded by the KISS1 gene, functioning as the endogenous ligand for KISS1R (GPR54). It is considered the master upstream regulator of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, driving GnRH neuron activation and downstream reproductive hormone signaling. Its discovery reshaped the field of reproductive endocrinology and made it a central research tool for hormone-pathway investigations.
Mechanism of Action
Kisspeptin binds to KISS1R (GPR54) on GnRH neurons in the hypothalamus, triggering a Gq-coupled signaling cascade that drives GnRH release. This pulsatile GnRH release in turn stimulates pituitary LH and FSH secretion, activating the downstream gonadal axis. Beyond reproductive control, kisspeptin signaling has been studied for its role in metabolic regulation, energy balance, and neuroendocrine integration.
